Most of the local population belongs to the Karanga Shona ethnic group. According to the 1982 Population Census, the village had a population of 16,290. There are 3 gold mines in Mashava (Temeraire, Gaths and King mines, however only King mine is functioning at the moment). Asbestos is mainly mined in the town.
