It is the capital of the Binh Dinh province and as of 1999 its population was 240,000. Historically the primary commercial activities of the city have focused around agriculture and fishing. However in recent years there has been a shift towards service industries and tourism. There is also a substantial manufacturing sector. Qui Nhon, or Quy Nhon as more often written presently, is the capital city of Binh Dinh Province on the coast of Southern Central Vietnam, being classified as a second-grade city of Vietnam. The city has a total area of 284.28km2 and a population of more than 260,000 inhabitants. It has been planned to become the first-grade city in 2020 with 334.73km2 and 500,000 people and determined by the Government as the central city of the south of the Key Economic Region of Central Vietnam, and one of the centres of international trade and service and transaction of the whole Central Vietnam and Central Highlands. Quy Nhon has more than a century history with a rich cultural background. Used to be the city of fisheries and services, Quy Nhon now turns to be the hub of wooden furniture and granite processing industries and the attractive destination for tourists.
