It was established on the 12th of September 1852 by Don Carlos Catala. Artigas is the furthest city from Uruguay's capital Montevideo, being 600kms away. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) A violent Marxist urban guerrilla movement, the Tupamaros, launched in the late 1960s, led Uruguay's president to agree to military control of his administration in 1973.
