It's located 23km from Cherkasy and is the center of Smila Raion (district). Population: 69,400 (2006). According to a legend during one of the numerous raids of the Tartars a maiden led prince's army in the rear. The enemies were defeated but the maiden was killed by the Tartars arrow. Nobody knows her name. When a settlement appeared on the place of the battle they named it Smila (from the Ukrainian word "smila" meaning "brave"). [1] The city was first mentioned in XVI century when it was a part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the 1648-1654 it was a squadron town of Chygyrynsky regiment. In 1773 the city obtained Magdeburg rights. In 1795 it became the part of Russian Empire. The city speed up its development following the opening of a railroad through Smela in 1876. In the XX century it suffered from devastating World War I, II, Holodomor, and economic depression following the fall of the Soviet Union. But each time the city recovered and now it's once again experiencing a rapid economic growth. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Ukraine was the center of the first Slavic state, Kievan Rus, which during the 10th and 11th centuries was the largest and most powerful state in Europe. Weakened by internecine quarrels and Mongol invasions, Kievan Rus was incorporated into the Grand Duc.
