Lubny in Ukraine UKRAINE ukraine. lubny Informations and links Lubny Map Lubny Photos Lubny Population on 05-Dec-01 : 52572 ------------------------------- Lubny (Ukrainian: ?????) is a city and the local capital of Lubny Raion (district) in Poltava Oblast, south-east of Poltava in Ukraine. Today, the population of Lubny is approximately 52,600 residents (1999). Lubny is reputed to be one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, allegedly founded in 988 by knyaz (prince) Vladimir the Great (Volodymyr) of Kiev. The first written record, however, dates from 1107. Initially, it was a small wooden fortress above the Sula river. The fortress quickly grew, and in the 15th or 16th century, it was owned by the powerful Wisniowiecki family. The town was ruled by Magdeburg rights and had a Coat of Arms. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Ukraine was the center of the first Slavic state, Kievan Rus, which during the 10th and 11th centuries was the largest and most powerful state in Europe. Weakened by internecine quarrels and Mongol invasions, Kievan Rus was incorporated into the Grand Duc.
