It is the largest Ukrainian port on the Danube Delta. Areas nearby form the World Wildlife Fund's Isles of Izmail Regional Landscape Park. Izmail is a minor center of food processing industry and a popular regional tourist destination. It is also a base of Ukrainian navy and Ukrainian Sea Guard units operating in Danube. Currently about 85,000 people live in Izmail, Russians form about 43.7% of Izmail's population, with 38% Ukrainians, 10% Bulgarians and 4.3% Moldovans. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Ukraine was the center of the first Slavic state, Kievan Rus, which during the 10th and 11th centuries was the largest and most powerful state in Europe. Weakened by internecine quarrels and Mongol invasions, Kievan Rus was incorporated into the Grand Duc.
