It is a capital of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (province) in the west of the country. Population 204,200 (2004). The city was erected as a fortress to protect the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from Tatar invasions. The city was firstly mentioned in 1662 in connection with it being granted the Magdeburg rights. Later, the fortress has also successfully withstood attacks by Turkish and Russian forces. Extensively rebuilt during the Renaissance, it was sometimes called Little Leopolis. The city was also an important center of Armenian culture in Poland. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Ukraine was the center of the first Slavic state, Kievan Rus, which during the 10th and 11th centuries was the largest and most powerful state in Europe. Weakened by internecine quarrels and Mongol invasions, Kievan Rus was incorporated into the Grand Duc.
