Cherkasy in Ukraine UKRAINE ukraine. cherkasy Informations and links Cherkasy Map Cherkasy Photos Cherkasy Population on 05-Dec-01 : 295414 ------------------------------- Cherkasy (Ukrainian,Rus.) - a city in the central part of Ukraine (about 200km south of Kyiv), capital of Cherkas'ka oblast', with 280,700 inhabitants (2004). The city is located at 49?25?60?N, 32?4?0?E on the bank of Dnipro River, and in particular, the Kremenchuk water reservoir. The train line from Moscow to Odessa goes through Cherkasy, crossing the Dnipro River here on a 12 km long bridge for trains and cars. Educational institutions include the Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University (named after Bohdan Khmelnytsky) and the Cherkasy State Technological University. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Ukraine was the center of the first Slavic state, Kievan Rus, which during the 10th and 11th centuries was the largest and most powerful state in Europe.
