It is also a center of Brovars'kyi raion (district). Brovary is connected to the world by railways and highways. Brovary is an ancient town, firstly mentioned in 1630. Its name means "brewers". Now it is Ukraine's shoe-making capital with dozens of such companies located here. Brovary is also an important sport center of Ukraine. Several world and Olympic champions were born and/or began their career here. International ill-fame came to the city in 2000 after one of its apartment blocks was hit by a stray surface-to-surface missile launched from a neighboring army shooting range in Honcharivs'ke. Ukraine was the center of the first Slavic state, Kievan Rus, which during the 10th and 11th centuries was the largest and most powerful state in Europe. Weakened by internecine quarrels and Mongol invasions, Kievan Rus was incorporated into the Grand Duc.
