It is located at 48?28?N 38?48?E in the Luhans'ka oblast', 45 km from Luhansk. Population 120,000 (as of 2004). Alchevsk is one of the largest industrial centers in the Donbas, and comprises a quarter of the entire oblast's production. The city economy depends on the "Alchevsk Metallurgy Kombinat" and "Alchevs'k Coke-Chemical Plant" companies. The city was known as Voroshilovsk (????????????) from 1931 to 1961, and then Kommunarsk (??????????) until 1992. Alchevsk was founded in 1895 with the establishment of an iron works, which benefited from massive expansion in the 1950s and '60s. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Ukraine was the center of the first Slavic state, Kievan Rus, which during the 10th and 11th centuries was the largest and most powerful state in Europe. Weakened by internecine quarrels and Mongol invasions, Kievan Rus was incorporated into the Grand Duc.
