It is the main municipality of Mbarara District. It is also the largest urban centre in Western Uganda. Mbarara is an important transport hub, lying west of Masaka on the road to Kabale, near Lake Mburo National Park. In April, 2005, the municipal council began laying down tarmac on the 2.4km Victor Bwana road. Mbarara has a number of streets which include Mbarara High Street, Mbaguta Street, Bishop Wills Street, Garage Street, Markhan Singh Street, Bulemba Road and Bucuku Street. Mbarara is the home of Mbarara University of Science & Technology, founded in 1989. There were many educational institutions well before then, including Bishop Stewart Teacher Training College, Maryhill High School for Girls, and for boys Mbarara High School and Ntare School. At independence these were state boarding schools whose pupils went on to make major contributions to Uganda today, including President Museveni (Ntare)and the academic, Dr. Sam Nahamya (MHS). Uganda achieved independence from the UK in 1962. The dictatorial regime of Idi AMIN (1971-79) was responsible for the deaths of some 300,000 opponents; guerrilla war and human rights abuses under Milton OBOTE (1980-85) claimed at least another 100,000 lives.
