The road is now completely tarmac along it's entire lenght having being completed in August 2005. The journey time from Kampala to Fort Portal to just over a mere 3 hours now along this route. Coming from Kasese the road is tarmac. Driving after dark is not recommended along this route. There are numerous matatus daily between Kasese and Fort Portal as there are between Fort Portal and Hoima. There are buses in the mornings to Kampala direct on the Mubende road and via Kasese, Mbarara. There is a Post Bus that runs to Kabale, departure at 05.00am. Using a public bus to Mbarara and changing there to a bus coming from Kampala proceeding to Kabale can also get you there. Providing you are in Mbarara by 1500 hrs you should have no problem in connecting with such a bus. Uganda achieved independence from the UK in 1962.
