We've also met with our cook who will come shopping with us. We have been given space at the National Museums of Tanzania, in which we'll accumulate our supplies until we pack to leave for the field. We hope to leave on Wednesday morning, early. We must visit the immigration office every morning to try to expidite getting our residence permits and hope that our efforts will result in having them by Tuesday. Tomorrow is a national holiday - saba saba (seven, seven) - which slows things down a bit. Our Tanzanian colleague, an NYU student named Charles Msuya, has been an invaluable help to us in getting things arranged. Without him, we'd be here for weeks before getting out of town with permits, vehicles, cook, etc. Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities..
