Khujand Chudaand Leninabad in Tajikistan TADJIKISTAN tajikistan. khujand-chudaand-leninabad Informations and links Khujand Chudaand Leninabad![]() ![]() Map Khujand Chudaand Leninabad Photos Khujand Chudaand Leninabad Population on 01-Jan-02 : 147400 ------------------------------- Khujand (Tajik also transliterated as Khudzhand, Russian ???????, formerly Khodjend until 1939 and Leninabad until 1992), is the second city of Tajikistan. It is situated on the Syr Darya River at the mouth of the Fergana Valley. The population of the city is 149,000 (2000 census), down from 160,000 in 1989. It is also the capital of the northernmost province of Tajikistan, now called Sughd. There are a group of historians who claim that Alexander of Macedon founded a Greek settlement in the place of today's Khujand in 329 BC called the city of Alexandria Eschate or "Alexandria The Furthest" - modern Khujand. It would have formed a bastion for the Greek settlers against the Scythian tribes to the north of the Syr Darya, which the Greeks called the Jaxartes River. It became a major staging point on the northern Silk Route. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Tajikistan has completed its transition from the civil war that plagued the country from 1992 to 1997. There have been no major security incidents in more than two years, although the country remains the poorest in the region. Attention by the international community in the wake of the war in Afghanistan has brought increased economic development assistance, which could create jobs and increase stability in the long term. Tajikistan is in the early stages of seeking World Trade Organization membership and has joined NATO's Partnership for Peace..
