Its population is about 51000 (2000 estimate) [1]. It is in the northern foothills of the Turkistan mountain range and is one of the oldest cities in Tajikistan. Istaravshan is one of the most ancient cities of the world. It has existed for more than 2500-years. It is located in the north of Tadjikistan, in foothills of Turkestani peaks. From ?reagional downtown of Khujand, Istaravshan is on the distance 78 km. The population of the district is 199,000. From them in city live 52,2 thousand, and in a countryside - 146,8 thousand people. The territorial area of Istaravshan is 1,830.09 square kilometres.
