If you’re not careful, you could miss something. I for o?ne believe most of us have. With the extension of the Nankang – Panchiao Line, the total number of stations that now make up the system is 60. That’s 60 different neighborhoods from your own; 60 new areas just waiting to be discovered (or if you happen to live near an MRT station, 59)! Think carefully and ask yourself just how many stations and their vicinities you know well. I feel comfortable in writing that for most of us, this number is less than half, or 30. Taiwan Ho! is out to change all of this. Each month, we will take you to a less-popular station of the MRT, exit the turnstiles, and have a look around. Who knows what we might find? So without further ado, we are pleased to present the MRT Station, Hung Shulin. In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan. Taiwan reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the Communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government using the 1946 constitution drawn up for all of China. Over the next five decades, the ruling authorities gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within the governing structure. In 2000, Taiwan underwent its first peaceful transfer of power from the Nationalist to the Democratic Progressive Party. Throughout this period, the island prospered and became one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issues continue to be the relationship between Taiwan and China - specifically the question of eventual unification - as well as domestic political and economic reform..
