Pigg's Peak in Swaziland SWAZILAND swaziland. piggspeak Informations and links Pigg's Peak Map Pigg's Peak Photos Pigg's Peak ------------------------------- South Africans used to flock to Piggs Peak for weekend gambling sessions but there are now closer places for the Johannesburgers to go. This small town in the north-western corner of Swaziland, is full of pine plantations for its busy logging industry. The area is known for the quality of its handicrafts. It is very attractive with Phophonyane Waterfalls close by, and rolling hills dotted with clusters of thatched mud and daub cottages. Rural Swazi life is little more than subsistence level, but "Africa Time" means that nothing is done in a hurry, and perhaps because of this, the people are very friendly. Autonomy for the Swazis of southern Africa was guaranteed by the British in the late 19th century; independence was granted in 1968. Student and labor unrest during the 1990s pressured the monarchy (one of the oldest on the continent) to grudgingly allow political reform and greater democracy. Swaziland recently surpassed Botswana as the country with the world's highest known rates of HIV/AIDS infection.
