University of Maribor
In 1859, a new seminary and religious school was opened in Maribor. After 1959, some colleges were founded as a result of the economic and social needs of the northeastern Slovenia. In 1961 the Association of Institutions of Higher Education was established and incorporated the existing colleges. This Association lived through 1975 when the new University of Maribor was born.

The Slovene lands were part of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria until 1918 when the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats in forming a new multinational state, renamed Yugoslavia in 1929.
