Okahandja in Namibia NAMIBIE namibia. okahandja Informations and links Okahandja Map Okahandja Photos Okahandja ------------------------------- Okahandja (meaning "the place where two rivers flow into each other to form one wide one") is a small town in central Namibia. It was founded sometime around 1800, by two area tribes, the Herero and the Nama. A German pastor, Heinrich Schmelen, became the first European to visit the town when he came in 1827. In 1844, two missionaries were permanently assigned to the town. A military base was established in Okahandja in 1894, and it is this date that is officially recognized as the town's founding. A large open-air curio market attracts tourists, and the town serves as the administrative centre for the Herero tribe. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) South Africa occupied the German colony of South-West Africa during World War I and administered it as a mandate until after World War II, when it annexed the territory. In 1966 the Marxist South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) guerrilla group launched a war of independence for the area that was soon named Namibia, but it was not until 1988 that South Africa agreed to end its administration in accordance with a UN peace plan for the entire region. Independence came in 1990 following multi-party elections and the establishment of a constitution. President NUJOMA is currently serving his third term as president..
