Luderitz in Namibia NAMIBIE namibia. luderitz Informations and links Luderitz![]() ![]() Map Luderitz Photos Luderitz ------------------------------- L?deritz, Namibia is a harbour town on one of the least hospitable coasts in Africa. It was founded in 1883 when Heinrich Vogelsang purchased Angra Peque?a and some of the surrounding land on behalf of Adolf L?deritz, a hanseat from Bremen, Germany, from the local Nama chief. L?deritz began its life as a trading post, with other activities in fishing and guano-harvesting. In 1909, after the discovery of diamonds nearby, L?deritz enjoyed a sudden surge of prosperity. Today, however, diamonds are mostly found elsewhere and offshore, and L?deritz has lost a lot of this interest. The harbour has a very shallow rock bottom, making it unusable for modern ships; this led to Walvis Bay becoming the centre of the Namibian shipping industry. Recently, however, the addition of a new quay has allowed larger fishing vessels to dock at L?deritz. The town has also re-styled itself in an attempt to lure tourists to the area, which includes a new waterfront area for shops and offices. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) South Africa occupied the German colony of South-West Africa during World War I and administered it as a mandate until after World War II, when it annexed the territory. In 1966 the Marxist South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) guerrilla group launched a war of independence for the area that was soon named Namibia, but it was not until 1988 that South Africa agreed to end its administration in accordance with a UN peace plan for the entire region. Independence came in 1990 following multi-party elections and the establishment of a constitution. President NUJOMA is currently serving his third term as president..
