Keetmanshoop in Namibia NAMIBIE namibia. keetmanshoop Informations and links Keetmanshoop![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Map Keetmanshoop Photos Keetmanshoop ------------------------------- Keetmanshoop ("Keetman's hope" in Afrikaans) is the traffic junction and the economic centre for the whole south of Namibia. Before the arrival of Europeans, the area was known as Nu-gouses, which means "Black Marsh" and indicated the presence of a spring in the area. In 1860 the Rhenish Mission Society founded a mission there to spread their faith to the local Nama. The first missionary, Johann Georg Schr?der, arrived in Keetmanshoop on April 14, 1866, which is now marked as the founding date of Keetmanshoop. The mission station was named after the German trader Johann Keetman who supported the mission financially, but never actually visited the place himself. They found that even though some Africans converted to Christianity, taking away their tribal beliefs was another matter. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) South Africa occupied the German colony of South-West Africa during World War I and administered it as a mandate until after World War II, when it annexed the territory. In 1966 the Marxist South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) guerrilla group launched a war of independence for the area that was soon named Namibia, but it was not until 1988 that South Africa agreed to end its administration in accordance with a UN peace plan for the entire region. Independence came in 1990 following multi-party elections and the establishment of a constitution. President NUJOMA is currently serving his third term as president..
