Map Coloane Photos Coloane Population on 23-Aug-01 : 2904 ------------------------------- Coloane (Traditional Chinese: ???, Simplified Chinese: ???; pinyin: L?huán D?o; Jyutping: Lou6-waan4 Dou2, literally "Road Ring Island") is one of the two main islands of Macau in the People's Republic of China. It is located directly south of the other main island, Taipa (??), and east of the Greater Hengqing Island (????) of Zhuhai, Guangdong province. Coloane was known as Jiuaoshan (TC: ???, Cantonese: Gau-Ou Saan, "Nine-inlet Mountain"), Yanzaowan (TC: ???, Cantonese: Yim-Zou Waan, "Salt-stove Bay"), and Guoluhuan (TC: ???, Cantonese: Gwo-Lou Waan, "Passing-road Ring"). The Portuguese name of "Coloane" is said to derive from the Cantonese pronunciation of "???". (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999. China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be practiced in Macau, and that Macau will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years..
