Tsuen Wan New Town in Hong Kong HONG KONG hong-kong. tsuen-wan-new-town Informations and links Tsuen Wan New Town  Map Tsuen Wan New Town Photos Tsuen Wan New Town ------------------------------- Tsuen Wan New Town is a new town in Hong Kong. It spans over Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi Island. Traditionally, the officials of Tsuen Wan managed the area of proper Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung, Tsing Yi Island, Ma Wan and Northeast Lantau Island. In 1982 the Tsuen Wan District formed under District Administration Scheme. In 1985, with the explosion of population in the new town, the district spun off Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi to form a new Kwai Tsing District. Thus, the new town is now under two administrative districts. Its total development area is about 24 kmē. The population of the new town is approximately 767,000 and is expected to rise to about 829,000 by 2011. Although Tsuen Wan New Town belongs to New Territories, it is also considered to be a part of Hong Kong urban area, like Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. It is because the town was early developed and is not blocked by hills or mountains with the distace to Kowloon geographically. Also, there is no NT taxis service in Tsuen Wan New Town except Tsuen Wan MTR Station and Tsing Yi MTR Station, unlike other new towns in New Territories. Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. In this agreement, China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years..
