It is the country's third-biggest city with a population of 100,192 in 1996 (census). It was founded by the Soninké people in the seventeenth century and became capital of the Baté Empire and an important trading centre, particularly for kola nuts. It was defeated by Samory Touré in 1879 and occupied by the French in 1891. The town is known for its university, for its religious scholars and its mango trees. It is home to an airport. It is a eleven hour drive from Conakry. It also has one of the oldest mosques in West Africa. Independent from France since 1958, Guinea did not hold democratic elections until 1993 when Gen. Lansana CONTE (head of the military government) was elected president of the civilian government. He was reelected in 1998 and again in 2003. Unrest in Sierra Leone and Liberia has spilled over into Guinea on several occasions over the past decade, threatening stability and creating humanitarian emergencies..
