Gourcy in Burkina Faso BURKINA FASSO burkina-faso. gourcy Informations and links Gourcy Map Gourcy Photos Gourcy Population on 10-Dec-96 : 16317 ------------------------------- Burkina Faso is a landlocked country of 105,869 square miles, located in the heart of Western Africa, approximately 600 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Ouagadougou, the capital city, counts some one million inhabitants. The country borders Benin, C?te d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger and Togo. Three principal rivers run through the country: The Mouhoun in the west and the Nazinon and the Nakemb?, which cut across the flat relief in the center of the country. High plains of about 1000 to 1300 feet comprise the major part of the territory, though a few elevations dot the country. The highest, Mount Tenakourou in the west near the border with Mali, measures 2500 feet, followed by the peak of Nahouri in the South. The North is Sahelian and arid; the central region is savanna; the South and Southwest are covered by wooded savanna. The most fertile and rich soils are located in the Southwest, the South and partly the East. Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) achieved independence from France in 1960. Repeated military coups during the 1970s and 1980s were followed by multiparty elections in the early 1990s. Burkina Faso's high population density and limited natural resources result in poor economic prospects for the majority of its citizens. Recent unrest in Cote d'Ivoire and northern Ghana has hindered the ability of several hundred thousand seasonal Burkinabe farm workers to find employment in neighboring countries..
