Lomas de Zamora is located in a region that supports livestock, grain, fruit, and poultry farms. Industries include meat packing, grain, and fruit processing, sawmilling, and the manufacture of dairy products, chemicals, rubber and paper products, and plastic and leather goods. The city is the site of an agricultural school and an art museum. Buenos Aires residents use it for camping and picnics. It has a large British community with separate schools. Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions.
