Goya in Argentina ARGENTINE argentina. goya Informations and links Goya Map Goya Photos Goya ------------------------------- Goya is a city in the south-east of the province of Corrientes in the Argentine Mesopotamia. It has about 87,000 inhabitants as of the 2001 census [INDEC]. The city lies on the left-hand (eastern) shore of the Paraná River, opposite Reconquista, Santa Fe, 222 km south from the provincial capital (Corrientes) and 715 km north-northwest from Buenos Aires. Goya hosts the annual National Festival of the Surubí, which includes a fishing contest. The surubí is a popular large catfish of the Paraná. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation..
