Saranda in Albania ALBANIE albania. saranda Informations and links Saranda![]() ![]() Map Saranda Photos Saranda ------------------------------- Sarandė (Albanian: Saranda or Sarandė, IPA /sa'?anda/ or /sa'?and?/; Italian: Santa Quaranta, 'Forty Saints'); Greek: ????? ??????? or Agioi Sarįnta /'a?i: sa'?anda/, is the capital of the District of Sarandė, Albania, and it is one of the most important tourist attractions of the Albanian Riviera. Situated on an open sea gulf of the Ionian at 39.88°N, 20.00°E, it has a population of about 15,000. Part of its original Greek and Albanian population moved into Greece during the large exodus in the early 90's. Opposite Sarandė is another tourist attraction, the Greek island of Corfu. There are daily ferries between them. In ancient times, Sarandė was called Onchesmos. Near Sarandė are the remains of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage site. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.)
Between 1990 and 1992 Albania ended 46 years of xenophobic Communist rule and established a multiparty democracy. The transition has proven difficult as successive governments have tried to deal with high unemployment, widespread corruption, a dilapidated infrastructure, powerful organized crime networks with links to high government officials, and disruptive political opponents. International observers judged parliamentary elections in 2001 to be acceptable and a step toward democratic development, but identified serious deficiencies. Some of these were addressed through reforms in the Albanian electoral code prior to the nationwide municipal elections in 2003..
