Korcë in Albania ALBANIE albania. korce Informations and links Korcë  Map Korcë Photos Korcë ------------------------------- Korçë (Albanian: Korçë or Korça, Greek: ???????, Korytsá, Italian: Corizza) is a major city in south-eastern Albania, located at 40°37? N 20°46? E near the border with Greece. It has a population of around 60,000 people (2003 estimate), making it the fifth largest city in Albania. It stands on a plateau some 850 m (2,800 feet) above sea level, surrounded by high mountains. Culture Korçë has been an important religious centre for Orthodox Christians and Muslims for centuries. It is the seat of an Orthodox metropolitan bishop and also possesses a large 15th century mosque. During the Ottoman period it became one of the centres of the growing Albanian identity, housing the first Albanian school. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Between 1990 and 1992 Albania ended 46 years of xenophobic Communist rule and established a multiparty democracy. The transition has proven difficult as successive governments have tried to deal with high unemployment, widespread corruption, a dilapidated infrastructure, powerful organized crime networks with links to high government officials, and disruptive political opponents. International observers judged parliamentary elections in 2001 to be acceptable and a step toward democratic development, but identified serious deficiencies.
