Kavajė was established in 1595 under the name of Kavalje which later on became Kavajė. It was the first city in Albania to start the anti-Communist revolution. The city lies at 8 m above sea level and has a coastline of approximately 35 km with "Golem" being its main beach. The population is 40,000 (As of 2004). In the District of Kavajė there are 105,415 inhabitants (according to the 2004 census). The area of the District is 393 square kilometers. Kavajė together with Tirana form the county of Tirana. The Italian name of Kavajė is Cavaia. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Between 1990 and 1992 Albania ended 46 years of xenophobic Communist rule and established a multiparty democracy. The transition has proven difficult as successive governments have tried to deal with high unemployment, widespread corruption, a dilapidated infrastructure, powerful organized crime networks with links to high government officials, and disruptive political opponents. International observers judged parliamentary elections in 2001 to be acceptable and a step toward democratic development, but identified serious deficiencies. Some of these were addressed through reforms in the Albanian electoral code prior to the nationwide municipal elections in 2003..
